A Study on Acute Myositis complicated with Acute CO Poisoning

Abstract
Acute myositis complicated with acute CO poisoning has been reported by some authors, but findings obtained from very limited cases ensude in the hesitation of the reporters to define conclusive views.
Since the widely prevalent uses of coal briquette as a domestic fuel we experienced explosive outbreak of CO poisoning ever year. For this reason, hyperbaric chamber unit was opend on Jan. 1969 at Seoul National University Hospital. More than 200 patients poisoned by CO had been received hyperbaric oxygenation every year. Though this experience, we found that many patients were complicated with acute myositis due to tissue hypoxia and compression of local part of the body,
Author followed 505 patients in their clinical sequences and summerized the findings concerned. An epidemiological study, also, was included because of the nature of this incidence.
Following findings were observed:
1. Higher incidence was observed in younger age group from 10 to 29.
2. Educational level was relatively higher than economic situation.
3. Occupational background was diverse, but the housewives and housemaids occupied more than
half in the female patients and in the male patients, the background was very diverse.
4. Higher incidence of acute myositis was found in female patients.
5. In the male patients, the site of the lesion was frequently found in the upper extremities and
in the female patients, more lesions were observed in the lower extremities. The lesions were found,
also, in the facial area and in the trunk.
6. Number of lesions in each individual was, relatively, higher in the male patients, but the degree of the injury was more severe in the female patients.
7. We experienced 4 acute renal failure as a sequence of the acute myositis. Two cases of them ensued in fatal outcome.
